How do I get a library card?


Free library cards
 
If you live in North Brunswick, own a  business or property in town or work in town, you are entitled to a free library card. Please bring current identification that includes your full name and North Brunswick address. 

Types of acceptable identification include:
  • driver's license
  • printed checks
  • current utility bills
  • real estate tax bill
  • student identification

Children must be at least three years old to have their own card.  Parents are responsible for their children's fines and lost or damaged materials.

How long can I check out Books, CDs, DVDs and Video Games?


Books and magazines
may be borrowed for three weeks.  There is virtually no limit on the number of books or magazines you can borrow, but books for school assignments may be limited at the discretion of the librarian.

Please note: New Adult titles may be borrowed for two weeks only.


DVDs

5 DVDs and 2 television DVD sets per card.
Patrons under the age of 17 cannot borrow MPAA rated R movies
Patrons under the age of 13 cannot borrow DVDs ( Proof of age may be required to check out movies.)
DVDs are checked out for one week with no renewal.
DVDs in the TV category are limited to 2 at a time, circulate for two weeks, are not renewable and can only be checked out by patrons aged 17 and older.
All DVDs can be reserved by North Brunswick card holders only.
The Library will check out our DVDs to valid cards of patrons from any library with which we have reciprocal borrowing.
Overdue fines are 10 cent per day per DVD or DVD set for each day the library is open.

RENTAL DVDs

$1.00 rental per day each day the library is open.
Limit 5 per card.
DVDs circulate only on adult library cards.
The DVD must be paid for when it is returned.
The DVDs in this collection are not reservable.
DVDs are checked out for one week with no renewal
This collection is also available to reciprocal borrowing library cardholders.
This collection is a service of the Friends of the North Brunswick Library.  Materials are selected, purchased, and processed by the Library staff. The DVDs are paid for by the Friends of the Library. All proceeds from the collection goes to the Friends.

RENTAL VIDEOGAMES

The Library will purchase videogames rated Early Childhood, Everyone, Everyone 10+ and Teen only. The seed money for this collection was provided by the Friends of the Library but all proceeds will go to the library budget and be used to purchase more games.
$3.00 charge for each game, payable when the game is checked out.
Limit 1 per adult card.
One week circulation period, no renewals.
$1.00 a day if returned overdue. Maximum fine is $5.00

This collection is available to reciprocal borrowing library cardholders.
Reserves can be placed on these materials only by North Brunswick Library cardholders.
The cost of the game will be charged if returned damaged.

Children's computer software

is limited to one at a time and may be borrowed for one week.


Books on CD and music CDs

are limited to five of each at a time and may be borrowed for two weeks.

FULL RULES FOR BORROWING LIBRARY MATERIALS

  • Identification as a North Brunswick resident must be presented when applying for a library card. Tax bills, driver’s license, or utility bills, etc. are acceptable identification.

  • Persons working in town, owning a business or property in town, attending school, or employed by the township or Board of Education are also entitled to free library cards. The policies concerning these cards are set forth in a separate policy.

  • Patrons are encouraged to use their library card to check out materials but we will accept an ID with name and address if a patron does not have their card with them. Reciprocal borrowing patrons must present a valid library card to take out materials.

  • Children must be at least three years old to have their own library card. The application must be signed by a parent or guardian.

  • Parents are responsible for their children’s fines and lost materials up until the child reaches 18 years old.

  • Persons aged 13 years and older will receive an adult library card.

  • Each person must use their own library card. The first lost card will be replaced at no charge. Subsequent cards will be replaced for $2.50 each.

  • Nonresident cards are available for $30.00 per year.

  • There is no limit on print materials. Materials for school assignments can be limited at the discretion of the librarian.

  • All library materials can be reserved.

  • Print materials can be borrowed for two weeks and are renewable twice in person, by phone or online. Materials on reserve and overdue materials cannot be renewed.

  • Computer software is limited to one at a time; it can be borrowed for one week and cannot be renewed.

  • Books on CD are limited to five at a time. They can be renewed twice.

  • Music CDs are limited to five at a time. They can be renewed twice.

  • There are separate policies for DVDs and videogames.

    Renewals and Overdues:


    You may renew books, magazines, books on tape/CD, and music CDs twice.

    You can bring the materials into the library.  You can call 732-246-3545 and ask to renew the items.  You can renew online.  For online renewal instructions, click here

    DVDs, computer software, or materials that have holds on them can not be renewed. 




    The fee for late items is 10¢ per day for each item overdue.

    What if the library doesn't have a book or DVD?


    We can request materials from any library in our catalog.  You can also put books on reserve in person, by calling 732-246-3545, or online through the catalog.  For instructions about putting books on hold, click here.

    Your library card is also good at many libraries throughout New Jersey, including libraries in Bergen, Sussex, and Warren counties, to name a few.  Stop at our circulation desk to register for open borrowing privileges.

    Can I use the computers?


    We have 20 computers available to the public.  All machines have Internet access as well as the Microsoft Office suite.  All machines are Windows XP, but they have the program added to accept Microsoft 2007 documents.  All of our machines have CD/DVD burners installed. And we have scanner attached to 4 computers (no charge for use).

    A library card is needed to login to the computers.  One session lasts one hour, but a new session can be started if no one is waiting to use the computers.

    All computers are connected to a central printer.  Printing is 5¢ per black and white page and 25¢ per color page.

    Can I donate books?


    The Library gratefully accepts gifts of books and other library materials.  These gifts are accepted without restrictions.  The Library reserves the right to keep or dispose of gift materials at the discretion of the librarian in charge.  Gift materials not kept for inclusion in the collection will be disposed of by sale, exchange, donation or discard.  Receipts and/or tax letters are provided on request. The Library does not appraise or place values on materials received as donations.
     

    The Library will accept:
           Books in good condition (no water damage, mildew, underlining, or highlighting).
           Paperback books with covers intact.
           Encyclopedias in complete sets and published within the last two years.
           DVDs, CDs, books on tape or CD.
           No More than 2 boxes or bags at a time.

    The library will not accept
           Textbooks, medical or legal texts.
           Record albums.
           Condensed books.
           Magazines.

           VHS Tapes or audio cassettes..
           Home recorded audio or videotapes.
           Materials to be recycled.

    The library isn't just books.  Other services we offer include:


    Fax service...$2.00 for the first page, $1.00 for each additional page for domestic numbers.  There is no charge for Toll-Free Fax Numbers.
    We do not offer International faxing.  The library will provide a free cover sheet.
     


    Postage stamps...books of stamps are available for sale in the Administration office.

     

    Copiers.  We have two photocopiers.  One is black and white only, the other offers color or black and white copies.  Black and white copies are available for 15¢ each.  Color copies are available for 25¢ each.

     

     

    Proctoring.  Are you a student taking online courses?  The library offers test proctoring for free for North Brunswick residents.  For more information, call the Reference Desk (732-246-3545) and ask for Jean.



    Note: this is not actually our room!


    Meeting room.  The library has a meeting room available for non-profit groups.  Seating is limited to about 25 people.

    Please check our calendar for room availability. For the most part, the calendar will indicate any time the room is in use. Occasionally, last minute events will come up,and we will notify you if there is a problem. We will call you to confirm your reservation.

    Room guidelines:
    We are happy to have your not-for-profit program/presentation in our library.

    • If you would like, we can include your program on the events calendar of our website, as well as on our monthly “Adult Programs” handout.
    • Any fliers produced by your organization will be posted on our bulletin board in the Reference section of the building.
    • Any additional publicity must be done by yourself.
    • Your phone number, not the library’s, must be used as the contact number.
    • You must handle your own registration of attendees, if applicable.
    • Meeting room use is limited to two reservations per month for each person/organization.
    The library can provide materials for your presentation, including chairs, tables, a white board and markers. If there is anything else you need, please contact us and we will make every effort to accommodate you.

           Where can I find an issue of Consumer Reports?

    Paper copies are kept at the reference desk, but you may also access articles via the EbscoHost database.  Click on MasterFILE Premier, and type Consumer Reports in the publication field.  Please note that there is a three month embargo on the most recent issues online.

           Do you have books listing the values of cars?
    We have several books at the reference desk.  You may also search Edmunds, the Kelley Blue Book, and NADA online at www.edmunds.com, www.kbb.com, and www.nada.com. Another resource is www.autoguide.com: a website for individuals searching for used cars.

           Do you have tax forms?
    During tax season we have standard forms and instruction booklets on hand.  We also have binders of reproducible forms; however, you may access the form you need any time at www.irs.gov.
