How do I get a library card?


Free library cards
 
If you live in North Brunswick, own a  business or property in town or work in town, you are entitled to a free library card. Please bring current identification that includes your full name and North Brunswick address. 

Types of acceptable identification include:
  • driver's license
  • printed checks
  • current utility bills
  • real estate tax bill
  • student identification

Children must be at least three years old to have their own card.  Parents are responsible for their children's fines and lost or damaged materials.

How long can I check out Books and CDs and DVDs?


Books and magazines
may be borrowed for two weeks.  There is virtually no limit on the number of books or magazines you can borrow, but books for school assignments may be limited at the discretion of the librarian.


Five DVDs and videocassettes may be checked out at a time. Patrons over the age of 13 can borrow DVDs and videos  Patrons over the age of 17 can borrow R rated videos. These items may be borrowed for one week.
 

Multidisc set DVDs in the TV category are limited to one at a time, circulate for 2 weeks, are not renewable and can only be checked out by patrons aged 17 and older.

Children's computer software is limited to one at a time and may be borrowed for one week.


Books on tape or CD and music CDs are limited to five of each at a time and may be borrowed for two weeks.

Renewals and Overdues:


You may renew books, magazines, books on tape/CD, and music CDs twice.

You can bring the materials into the library.  You can call 732-246-3545 and ask to renew the items.  You can renew online.  For online renewal instructions, click here

DVDs, computer software, or materials that have holds on them can not be renewed. 




The fee for late items is 10¢ per day for each item overdue.

What if the library doesn't have a book or DVD?


We can request materials from any library in our catalog.  You can also put books on reserve in person, by calling 732-246-3545, or online through the catalog.  For instructions about putting books on hold, click here.

Your library card is also good at many libraries throughout New Jersey, including libraries in Bergen, Sussex, and Warren counties, to name a few.  Stop at our circulation desk to register for open borrowing privileges.

Can I use the computers?


We have 20 computers available to the public.  All machines have Internet access as well as the Microsoft Office suite.  All machines are Windows XP, but they have the program added to accept Microsoft 2007 documents.  Half of our machines have CD/DVD burners installed.

A library card is needed to login to the computers.  One session lasts one hour, but a new session can be started if no one is waiting to use the computers.

All computers are connected to a central printer.  Printing is 5¢ per black and white page and 25¢ per color page.

Can I donate books?


The Library gratefully accepts gifts of books and other library materials.  These gifts are accepted without restrictions.  The Library reserves the right to keep or dispose of gift materials at the discretion of the librarian in charge.  Gift materials not kept for inclusion in the collection will be disposed of by sale, exchange, donation or discard.  Receipts and/or tax letters are provided on request. The Library does not appraise or place values on materials received as donations.
 

The Library will accept:
       Books in good condition (no water damage, mildew, underlining, or highlighting).
       Paperback books with covers intact.
       Encyclopedias in complete sets and published within the last two years.
       DVDs, videos, CDs, books on tape or CD, audiocassettes.
       No More than 2 boxes or bags at a time.

The library will not accept
       Textbooks, medical or legal texts.
       Record albums.
       Condensed books.
       Magazines.
       Home recorded audio or videotapes.
       Materials to be recycled.

The library isn't just books.  Other services we offer include:


Fax service...$2.00 for the first page, $1.00 for each additional page for domestic numbers.  For international calls, the charge is $5.00 for the first page, $1.00 for each additional page.  The library will provide a free cover sheet.
 


Notary service...$2.00 per notary signature.  Please call first (732-246-3545) to make sure that a notary is available.

 

 


Postage stamps...books of stamps are available for sale in the Administration office.

 

Copiers.  We have two photocopiers.  One is black and white only, the other offers color or black and white copies.  Black and white copies are available for 15¢ each.  Color copies are available for 25¢ each.

 

 

Proctoring.  Are you a student taking online courses?  The library offers test proctoring for free for North Brunswick residents.  For more information, call the Reference Desk (732-246-3545) and ask for Jean.

Meeting room.  The library has a meeting room available for non-profit groups.  Seating is limited to about 25 people. Click here for an application and here for policies and terms of use.  Please print out the application and mail, fax (732-246-1341) or bring it to the library.

We are happy to have your not-for-profit program/presentation in our library. If you would like, we can include your program on the events calendar of our website, as well as on our monthly “Adult Programs” handout. Any fliers produced by your organization will be posted only on our bulletin board and handout area in the Reference section of the building. We also will fax for you, at no charge, press releases which you produce to the Home News Tribune, Sentinel, and the Star Ledger. Any additional publicity you wish to do outside of the library must be done by yourself. Your phone number, not the library’s, must be used as the contact number. And you must handle your own registration of attendees, if applicable.

The library can provide materials for your presentation, including chairs, tables, a white board and markers. If there is anything else you need, please contact us and we will make every effort to accommodate you.

       Where can I find an issue of Consumer Reports?

Paper copies are kept at the reference desk, but you may also access articles via the EbscoHost database.  Click on MasterFILE Premier, and type Consumer Reports in the publication field.  Please note that there is a three month embargo on the most recent issues online.

       Do you have books listing the values of cars?
We have several books at the reference desk.  You may also search Edmunds, the Kelley Blue Book, and NADA online at www.edmunds.com, www.kbb.com, and www.nada.com. Another resource is www.autoguide.com: a website for individuals searching for used cars.

       Do you have tax forms?
During tax season we have standard forms and instruction booklets on hand.  We also have binders of reproducible forms; however, you may access the form you need any time at www.irs.gov. For state forms, visit www.1040.com.  There are also direct links to popular forms on our Community Resources page
